Green Cities Coalition of the Pikes Peak Region

Each year, the electricity created by Colorado Springs Utilities (SU) by burning coal releases nearly 9 billion pounds of CO2 into our air along with many other harmful chemicals such as mercury, arsenic, sulfur and radioactive elements. The chemicals that come out of power plants can be found in the blood of animals, adults and even unborn children.

Climate change and global warming are believed to be another effect of burning coal. Such power plants are calculated to produce about half of all the fossil fuel contributions to man made carbon emissions.

Aside from conservation, you can now make a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by signing up to buy the clean, renewable energy from wind power. Colorado Springs Utilities has solicited proposals for a new wind farm to supply power to our community.

For every 100 kWhr of wind power you sign up for, more than 2500 pounds of carbon dioxide is not released into our air each year. If our community invests in a 50 megawatt wind farm, more than 250 million pounds of CO2 can be prevented annually. This is a small first step and we need your commitment to buy this new power.

I am committed to improving our environment through clean energy and this is my pledge.

I would like to participate in Colorado Springs Utilities (SU) Wind Power Program. I understand that my electric bill
would include an increase depending on my selection below and that I can cancel my participation at any time.

(please select from one of the following)
I Agree to purchase wind power to supply all of my electricity.
I know this will cost an additional $14-28 per month based on 700 kWh per month. I understand this charge is in ADDITION to my regular charges for electricity and that the charge will go down if coal prices go up or a carbon tax is initiated.
I Agree to purchase x 100 kWh blocks of wind power per month.
I know this will cost an additional $2-4 per block of electricity per month. I understand this charge is in ADDITION to my regular charges for electricity and that the charge will go down if coal prices go up or a carbon tax is initiated.

(Please check the following if you agree)
I recommend the cost of wind power be distributed equally to all utility customers.
The cost of an average family electric bill would go up approximately $2 per month if SU bought 50 megawatts of wind power.

This is not a contract. SU will contact you prior to any new charges for this program.
Additional charges would not begin until the new wind farm comes online in late 2010.
